Miriam Makeba - Maria Fulô
Mama Afrika is the voice of South Africa and she will remembered for songs such as 'Pata Pata' and 'Click Song Number 1' or 'Qongqothwane' in Xhosa, a Southafrican language which was her mother tongue (not English). This little gem is hidden in her album 'Pata Pata' released in 1968, the first time I heard the song I couldn't understand a thing, because I was expecting either Zulu, Xhosa or English, but I was so happy and surprised at the same time when I realized it was Portuguese!
She has such a beautiful voice, husky, organic, deep and touching. A great performer and the best singer ever from South Africa.
During Apartheid times she had to live abroad, but it didn't break her spirit. Not a singer, but a true artist! She performed in the movie "Sarafina" (which I recommend to all of you if you want to find out about the Apartheid policies in South Africa)
