The littlest of them all!
Why start a post with a sentence that makes little or no sense at all? The answer is very simple. A few minutes ago I read a post from another blog, posted by a dear friend who I barely see or talk to due to his multiple occupations. In this post he expresses his philosophical questions about love, life and other emotions that put him in a place of discomfort. Of course, what really bothers me is not the fact that his questions are all philosophical in content, is the fact that the questions are considered by him as non-existentialist issues.
The I noticed that this questions where basically psychological in nature, not philosophical, questions that any therapist would be more than willing to answer for a couple hundred an hour, following multiple sessions. But... again... who can tell people that not all questions about life and living are philosophical? Sometimes I feel that I spent ten years of my life learning about existentialist questioning when in reality philosophy is meant to be critical, extremely analytical and rational. Again, all the new age and self help books have used the word Philosophy in so many ways that it became nothing but a blur of what it originally meant. They turned a lifestyle into a philosophy.
The dictionary does not help at all. If you read the definition it uses as an example the term "philosophy of life" to indicate that one has chosen a particular point of view to live one's life.
But what really bothers me, annoys me, drives me crazy, offends me, is that when you tell people they might be mistaken, they just ignore you... well, I'm a f#cking philosopher! I know what I am talking about!
Now it makes sense, this comments, even the littlest of them all, can put a life dedicated to philosophizing down the toilette. After all, who am I but a mere philosopher? So why should I talk about philosophy, right?
